石川県金沢市の自然豊かな山里で、北尾正治さん・マキさんご夫婦は制作をしています。

その工房の庭には、制作の発想の根源、そして制作の道具となる石がゴロゴロとしていたり、制作途中あるいは壊れてしまった作品が、また土に還るのを待っているかのように置いてあったり、とても印象的な工房でした。

In the serene mountain village of Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, the husband-and-wife duo, Masaharu Kitao and Maki Kitao, create their works.

Their studio is surrounded by nature, and its garden is filled with stones that inspire their creations and serve as tools for their art. Scattered around the garden are partially completed works or broken pieces, as if waiting to return to the earth. The atmosphere of the studio left a lasting impression on us.

私たち人類が形あるモノを作るには、地球の物質を必要とします。その根本的なことを頭の片隅に置いてお二人は制作しているように思えます。

できるだけ自然に抗わず、生まれてくる発想にも抗わず。まるでお二人も作品も地球の一部なんだというように。

As humans, we rely on the materials of the earth to create tangible things. It seems that the Kitaos keep this fundamental truth in mind as they work. They appear to create without resisting nature and without suppressing the inspirations that arise, as if they and their works are part of the earth itself.

ユニークであり真意を探りたくなるような造形と、繊細な絵柄と九谷焼の色彩から生まれる作品は、見れば見るほど引き込まれてしまいます。

Their creations, which combine uniquely intriguing forms, intricate designs, and the vivid colors of Kutaniware, draw you in the more you observe them.

一点一点に思い入れがあり、素晴らしい芸術作品ですが、そこを感じさせない力がお二人の作品には感じられます。まさに地球の一部のような自然的で繊細な作品です。

Each piece carries deep meaning and is a remarkable work of art. Yet, their pieces also possess a subtle power that doesn’t make you overly aware of their magnificence－they feel as natural and delicate as if they were truly part of the earth.
