To know Urushi
The entrance to the Urushi world is through Nayuki Sonoyo
漆器（しっき）は木や紙や布に漆を塗り重ねて作られます。歴史は陶磁器よりも古く、約9000年前（縄文時代）に現在の日本で始まっているとされています。
ゆえに、日本古来の文化として、漆を皆様に知っていただきたいと思います。
Shikki (lacquer ware) is made by overlapping wood, paper and cloth using urushi (lacquer),
Shikki is known to have started in Japan and has a history of about 9,000 years. (Jomon era) which is older than ceramic wares. Because of this, I would like to introduce you to urushi, a culture known in Japan from ages ago.
漆は「塗り直し」ということができます。
漆が擦れてきた場合は、そこにまた漆を塗り直します。そうして何年も何百年も使い続けることができます。
例えば、神社仏閣に使われていたり、先祖代々受け継がれるものや、天皇家に継がれているものの多くは、漆が塗られています。それは装飾の意味だけではなく、塗り重ねられて永久的に継承できる自然の素材だからです。
Urushi has the amazing ability to withstand repeated layering over to restore and last.
If urushi is worn down it can be restored by layering over the area. This allows the object to last for ages, even hundreds of years.
For instance, lacquered objects have been used at temples and shrines, objects handed down through generations and many items inherited down through the Imperial families. This process is not just for decorative purpose, but this method uses natural materials to make objects last for ages.
漆の椀やスプーンや箸を使ったことはありますか？
口当たりは、陶器磁器、プラスチック、ガラス、ステンレスとは違い、際立って良いことです。唇の粘膜と温度差がなく、優しい丸みと質感、使い始めたら漆の口当たりの良さにびっくりします。
また、漆は断熱性が高く熱が伝わりにくいので、熱湯が入っても手で持つことができます。
そして、軽くて割れにくい。
歳を重ねていく私たちには、軽くて使いやすい器はぴったりです。
Have you ever used lacquered bowls or spoons, chopsticks？
The touch against your lips will be amazing. It will be nothing like ceramic, plastic, glass or stainless wares.
You will awaken to the perfect feel of lacquered wares. The way it has the same warmth as your lips and how gently the curves welcome the touch.
Lacquer also has high heat insulating property so that you can hold it even after pouring hot liquid into it.
It is also light and hard to crack.
Very convenient as we age, because it will always stay light and easy to use.
そんな漆の良さを、名雪さんはもっともっと知ってもらいたいと言います。
「漆を知る」という入り口が自分の作品だったらと。
Nayuki wants you to learn so much more about the joy of urushi
She hopes that your entrance to “Knowing Urushi” will be her objects.
私は、名雪さんの作品をデザインから知りました。とってもモダンで使いたい飾りたいと。
その作品がたまたま漆でできていた、ということ。そこから漆を知りたいと思い、漆の独特な色、使い勝手、口当たり、漆の良さや永久的に使える素晴らしさに引き込まれていきました。
I learned Nayuki’s work through her design. They are very modern and beg to be used, to be displayed.
It just so happened that the objects were made with urushi. This made me want to know more about urushi. It’s distinct colors, how it easily handles, the feel against the lips and hands. I was completely drawn into the wonderful world of urushi. The lovely way it handles and how it can last forever.
名雪園代さんのモダンで機能的で
素晴らしい作品を皆様に見ていただきたい。
そして漆を知っていただきたい。
日用品としても。アートとしても。
