On a scorching summer day, I visited Hana Ando, a florist in Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture.
夏の暑い日、花 安藤さんに会いに金沢へ。
古い町並みの一角に整えられた日本家屋。その一階部分に花 安藤さんはあります。門をぬけると冷んやりとした風と青もみじの木陰が私たちを迎えてくれました。
Along the street where old Japanese houses stand in a row, you’ll find the florist on the first floor of an exceptionally beautiful house. One step inside the gate, a cool breeze and a shade created by young maple leaves welcome you.
On a scorching summer day, I visited Hana Ando, a florist in Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture.
苔むす庭と青もみじから降り注がれる柔らかな影にしばし時を忘れます。私たちの頃合いを見て、安藤さんが声をかけてくださいました。
We stood still for a moment to appreciate the garden, where moss covers the ground and soft sunlight filters through the maple leaves. Ms. Ando greeted us at an opportune moment.
花 安藤さんは、季節の和の花や野の花を主に取り扱う生花店です。店主の安藤さんにお話をうかがいました。凛とした佇まいの中から、真っ直ぐとしたお心が感じ取れます。
Hana Ando is a florist who specializes in seasonal Japanese flowers and wildflowers. We talked with the shop’s owner, whose demeanor is dignified, and her heart, pure and sincere.
安藤さんが花を選んだのは「人の心のそばにいたい」という思いからでした。直接的なことではなく、気づかれないほどの距離感でと。小さなこと、それはとても小さなこと。水面がきらきらと光るぐらい静かで小さなことと安藤さんは言います。愛する人に美味しいご飯を食べてもらいたいという日々のことや。人を迎えるために庭の花を一輪いけたり。気遣いをさせないように人を待ったり。灯りをともしたり。整えたり。
そんなふうに、花を通して人の心のそばにいれたらと。
Ms. Ando said that she chose to work with flowers because she “wanted to be close to people’s hearts, at a far distance where I’m almost imperceptible”. She says “It’s a very small presence, as quiet and small as a flicker of light on the water’s surface.” Similar to the way we cook for our loved ones, arrange a single flower to welcome guests, quietly wait for family members to return home, turn on the lights so that the house is warm and inviting, and tidy the house. She wished to be there for someone.
枝を断ち切る、ぱちんぱちんという空間に響く美しい音。
葉や枝を極力落とさず、あるいは潔く落とし、整えていきます。
安藤さんは花を仕事にしようと生花店で働き始めた頃、季節感のない一年中咲く花や、品種改良で束ねやすく真っ直ぐになった茎の花、農薬で虫もつかない花、過剰な肥料で長持ちする花、そんな花々を扱う自分に疲れ、地球や自然に良くないことをしているのではないかという葛藤を抱いたそうです。そんな時、剣山さえも使わず、自然の枝ぶりを活かし、いける側の目線ではなくあくまでも、誰がためにいける日本の生け花の原点の素晴らしさを改めて思い知ったそうです。
Snip. Snip. The sound of her cutting flowers echo through the space beautifully. Sometimes she keeps as many leaves and sprigs as possible. Other times, she removes them without hesitation.
Shortly after she began her career as a florist with her mind set to make it her profession, she began to feel conflicted. She was working with flowers available throughout the year, lacking a sense of seasonality. Flowers that have been selectively bred to grow long and sturdy stems to facilitate making a bouquet. Flowers that insects refused to live in because of the pesticides, or that lasted unnaturally long due to excessive fertilization. She grew weary of working in such an environment, and questioned the industry that seemed to be harming Earth and nature.
It was then that she rediscovered the beauty of Japanese ikebana. Ikebana, in its original form, uses no floral frogs, appreciates the plant’s natural shape, and the arrangement is not a self expression, but is a creation for someone you care about.
彼女が花と対峙する姿は息を呑むほど美しい姿でした。
花と真摯に向き合う緊張感と凛とした静かな瞬間。花との一定の距離を保ち、見るものの目線から一番美しく愛でられるようにいける。
青もみじをいける彼女に、愛という言葉の前にある小さな小さな日々の愛を感じたのは私だけではないと思います。
いつでも彼女は「人の心のそばにいたい」という思いと共にあり、それは言葉よりも前にある誰が為への静かな愛だと私は感じました。
How she dealt with flowers took my breath away.
There was tension, dignity, and earnestness when she held a flower. Keeping a certain distance from the flower, she arranged it so it could be admired at its best by the viewer.
Watching her arrange young maple trees, anyone can see a deep affection that may not be described as love, but is truly genuine. She lives by her words to be close to the hearts of people, and it’s a quiet love for others.
夏の初め、大切な人へ花 安藤さんの花を贈りました。
私からお伝えした贈り先の方への思いを汲み取ってくださり、美しく優しい花を贈ってくださいました。

At the beginning of summer, I sent Hana Ando’s flowers to someone special as a gift. She understood the feelings I wanted to convey to the recipient, and created a beautiful and delicate arrangement. Thank you.
