先日、あけび細工の和島常男さんと山形の長文堂さんに会いに宮城県と山形県に行ってきました。写真は旅の途中で立ち寄った、山形の農家さんの梅でつけた梅酒です。山形の肉厚の梅で今年も美味しい梅酒ができますように。1年後、5年後、10年後、30年後の出来が今から楽しみです。
A day in July
I took a road trip from Kanagawa to Miyagi and Yamagata to see the akebia craft master Mr. Tsuneo Wajima and a manufacturer of cast iron kettle, Chobundo. I stopped by at a farmer’s stand in Yamagata to buy plums and brought them back home to make plum wine. Plum wine needs to age. I look forward to drinking it a year, 5, 10 and even 30 years from now.

和島常男さんに会いに行きました。
宮城県で唯一のあけびつる細工の名士「和島常男さん」あけびのつるを山に採りに行き（山に採りに行くのも、熊や蜂に遭遇したりと命懸けの様です）採れた蔓を何ヶ月も乾かし整え乾かし整え、そして編む。全工程を10とすると蔓を編めるまでに整えることが８、編む工程は２、だそうです。ついつい編みの美しさに囚われてしまい、自然の蔓の編むまでの工程の大変さを忘れてしまっていました。そして出来上がる作品は美しく素晴らしく貴重な作品です。
I went to see Mr. Tsuneo Wajima. The one and only master in Miyagi prefecture of akebia vine weaving craft. He risks his life going into the mountain, where encounters with vicious bees and bears are inevitable, to gather wild akebia vines himself.
常男さんのお父様が作られたつる細工も見せていただきました。80年ほど前の作品です。まだまだ現役のその作品は黒光りし、美しさがまし、経年変化でしか出せない風格を纏っていました。
He then washes and dries to tame the vine repeatedly for many months before even starting a weaving process. It is said that 80% of the work is in preparation, and the actual weaving is about 20%. The beautiful weaves of the baskets mesmerize us. They’re works of art. As such, it is easy for us to appreciate the artistry of the weave, of the finished product. However, we often overlook the amount of effort that goes into the preparation of crafts involving wild, natural material.
百年後も二百年後もそれは生き続ける。
そんな貴重なあけびを持ち続ける幸福感、今後ますます貴重となる和島常男さんの作品を育てる幸福感を皆様にもぜひ感じていただきたい。
I was fortunate to see firsthand the baskets made by Tsuneo’s father, some as old as 80 plus years, still in use. Not only withstanding years of daily use, they have gained beautiful patina, blackened luster. They show grace that comes only from aging.
十年後三十年後の自分には
和島常男さんのあけびのかご
美しさや艶は深みを増し
自分だけの大切な大切な価値あるものへと変化いたします。
When I get old, I see myself surrounded by and still using beloved pieces that have aged well with me like the baskets by Tsuneo Wajima. They will be more beautiful with an added depth from maturity. They will possess special meanings no money can buy.
